While the familiar sites like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg continue to draw tourists in large numbers, the focus on these popular spots often leads to overcrowding, putting a strain on local infrastructure and resources. This not only diminishes the experience for visitors but also limits the economic benefits of tourism to a few areas. However, expanding the tourism experience by exploring and promoting lesser-known gems that Kashmir has to offer can be a game-changer at this juncture. Kashmir is replete with off-beat destinations that are yet to receive the attention they deserve. Take the scenic town of Doodhpathri, for instance, known for its vast meadows and tranquil surroundings. Situated in the Budgam district, it offers a serene retreat amidst lush greenery and snow-capped mountains, far from the crowded tourist hubs. Similarly, Tosa Maidan, a picturesque plateau nestled between the Pir Panjal mountains, remains a hidden treasure. These spots, though equally enchanting, have remained overshadowed by the more commercialized locations. Further in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, lies Bangus Valley, a place that seems almost untouched by time. Another underexplored gem is Aharbal, known as the ‘Niagara of Kashmir’ for its stunning waterfall. The future of Kashmir’s tourism lies in its diversity. While the Valley will always be a haven for those seeking familiar destinations, it is the unexplored, off-beat locales that hold the key to unlocking the full potential of the region. By expanding the tourism horizon to include these hidden gems, we can not only decongest popular spots but also create sustainable, long-term growth for the local economy. As Kashmir moves forward, it is time to embrace its full beauty and diversity, one off-the-beaten-path destination at a time.
