Srinagar, Jan 2: Jammu and Kashmir’s Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, lauded the exceptional hospitality of Kashmiris, particularly during the recent snowfall that left many tourists stranded.
Speaking to reporters, Sharma highlighted the unmatched warmth and generosity of the local population. “The hospitality of the people of Kashmir is truly unparalleled. Here, we find the essence of hope and secularism that is rare elsewhere,” he remarked, emphasizing the region’s spirit of unity.
Sharma praised the efforts of local families who went above and beyond to assist stranded tourists, offering shelter, food, and support during the adverse weather conditions. “I am deeply grateful to those families who opened their homes, mosques, and gurdwaras to provide shelter. These people are unsung heroes, and their actions reflect the heartwarming compassion of the Kashmiri people,” he added.
On the government’s preparations for the winter season, the minister reassured the public that sufficient provisions had been made for snow-affected areas. “We have ensured a buffer stock of essentials for the next five months, and we’ve not received any complaints about shortages or unavailability of rations,” Sharma confirmed.
Sharma also expressed his vision of bringing the Indian Premier League (IPL) to Jammu and Kashmir in the next two years, citing the enthusiasm and potential of the region’s youth. “Kashmir has immense potential for sports, and it’s a great way to provide employment opportunities for our youth,” he said.
On the subject of development, Sharma called for increased financial support from the Central government to address the region’s challenges. “Jammu and Kashmir is the crown of India, and our people have endured significant hardships over the past three decades. We deserve extra funds to improve our quality of life, and Central support is vital to help us overcome financial difficulties,” he emphasized.
Sharma further revealed that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would soon visit Delhi to discuss matters related to the region’s development and financial needs. “CM Omar Abdullah will be in Delhi in the coming days. We are following the instructions from him, and I am confident that good news will soon be shared with the people of J&K,” he stated.
On the functioning of Sports Associations in Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma assured that the issues of the 53 recognized associations would be addressed after consulting relevant stakeholders. “We are committed to resolving their concerns and improving the sports sector in the region,” he concluded.
