The fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir has brought cheer among the faces of people associated with the tourism sector, but the common masses in Srinagar, have faced immense hardships, especially in the Old City areas as the interiors witnessed the inundation, causing difficulties to the people while passing through these streets. The drainage system across Srinagar was recently renovated by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), but the recent snowfall has exposed the works done by the concerned as the drainages were seen overflowing in the interiors of the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. One fails to understand why there has been no end to the miseries of the common masses in the Old City areas despite the renovation of the drainage system as the light snowfall or rains has been landing the people into redouble across the City. The parts of Jammu and Kashmir including Srinagar received fresh snowfall since January 5 afternoon, bringing down the mercury in the Valley. Several areas especially the higher reaches of Kashmir received moderate snowfall, which is set to attract the tourists from outside Jammu and Kashmir. However, there is an immediate and dire need to bring respite to the people from the faulty drainage system. The concerned authorities must take immediate steps to renovate the drainage system in Srinagar areas so that the people here could heave a sigh of relief. Besides, it is high time for the government to investigate the matter and ensure whether the funds have been properly utilized for the public wellbeing.
