Srinagar, Jan 14: With the preparations are in full swing as Kashmir gears up to host the 5th Khelo India Winter Games, over 1,000 athletes from across the country are expected to participate.
The much-anticipated event, aimed at promoting winter sports and tourism, will see snow-based competitions in Gulmarg from February 22 to 25, while ice-based events will take place in Ladakh from January 23 to 27.
The event will feature competitions in Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Snowboarding and Ski Mountaineering, with athletes representing states and union territories across India.
The 4th edition in 2024 saw similar enthusiasm, with participation from 20 states competing in various categories, highlighting the region’s capability to host such large-scale sporting events.
Speaking about the upcoming event, Farooq Ahmad Shah, MLA Gulmarg, expressed confidence in the arrangements, stating, “Gulmarg will soon bustle with activities, as we welcome over 1,000 athletes from across the country. This is not just a grand event for sports but also a significant opportunity to boost tourism in the region.”
He added that preparations are on track and the authorities are committed to making the event a resounding success, with a memorable experience for everyone.
While responding to critics, he remarked, “We trust our leader and the speech by Omar Sahab during Z-Morh Tunnel inauguration has been widely appreciated. He is the Chief Minister for everyone, chosen by the people.”
The MLA also expressed hope for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a sentiment shared by many in the region.
Its noteworthy, that during the inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Gulmarg the “winter sports capital of the country,” emphasizing its growing importance on the national and international sports map. (KNO)
