SPREAD-A mission for new destinations

When answers raise more questions

Kashmir’s handcrafted artistry has gained global recognition in the recent past with the people from different parts of the globe praising the handwork of the artists here. These treasures, crafted by skilled artisans over generations, serve as a symbol of the craftsmanship and devotion embedded in each piece. However, there are reports of increasing sales of machine-made products falsely marketed as genuine Kashmir handicrafts. The Department of Handicrafts here has also issued a stern warning to showroom owners, calling on them to desist from selling these counterfeit items. This warning serves as a crucial step to protect the authenticity of Kashmir’s handicrafts, preserve the livelihoods of local artisans, and maintain the region’s cultural legacy. The sale of machine-made replicas, often mass-produced in factories outside the region, undermines the painstaking labor and skill of artisans who rely on traditional techniques passed down through generations. These counterfeit products, although cheaper to produce, fail to capture the soul of Kashmir’s artistic traditions. Worse still, they mislead customers who may be unaware of the deception, damaging the reputation of the industry as a whole. The warning issued by the Department of Handicrafts is an important step toward preserving the legacy of Kashmir’s artisans and the integrity of their craft. Showroom owners must heed this message and stop the sale of machine-made items under the guise of handicrafts. By doing so, they will not only protect the interests of local artisans but also preserve the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir for future generations.
