From religious clerics to the social leaders, the call for the ban on online gambling has gone louder in Jammu and Kashmir with majority of them demanding the government to take stern action over the issue and put an end to the nuisance within the society. The rise of online gambling in Jammu and Kashmir is an issue that demands urgent attention. In recent years, digital gambling platforms have proliferated across the region, posing a serious threat to the well-being of individuals and families. While the allure of easy money and the anonymity offered by these platforms might attract many, the social, economic, and psychological repercussions are devastating. It is time for the Jammu & Kashmir government to take decisive action and implement an outright ban on online gambling. Online gambling can be addictive, and for a region like Jammu & Kashmir, where unemployment rates are high and economic distress is a daily reality for many, the consequences are even more severe. Vulnerable individuals, including young adults and even teenagers, are falling prey to these platforms, draining their savings, accumulating debt, and sometimes resorting to criminal activity to fuel their habit. Families, already facing economic challenges, are further burdened by the financial ruin that gambling addiction brings. While some argue that online gambling may generate revenue through taxes and create jobs in the tech sector, the costs—both human and social—far outweigh any potential financial gain. The health and security of the people must come first. There is an urgent need for the Jammu & Kashmir administration to prioritize public well-being and take bold steps to address this growing threat.
