Joint efforts required to end cybercrimes

Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the Valley has witnessed a steep surge in the number of cybercrime cases, which is a prevalent threat amidst the shift from normal life to the digital era. The people, preferring to switch to the technology in a bid to ease their work, have faced multiple challenges as well while the major threat amongst all is the cybercrimes. The threat is visible on the ground as the police too have been making frequent statements over the reports of phishing scams; hacking and cyberbullying, giving an indication that the people need to remain very vigilant and aware while using the technology. The people in the last couple of years have been openly reporting the incidents of financial frauds and other related things, indicating how the criminals remain on watch to grab the hard-earning money from the common masses by duping them in one way or the other. Social media has turned out to be vulnerable for the common masses as the fear of threat, defamation and other related issues taking place day-in and day-out has impacted the people, especially the younger generation as they spend a lot of time on the social media platforms for education and other reasons. The more they spend time on social media platforms, the more they get exposed to the cyberbullying, which simultaneously jeopardizes their mental health. These incidents could seriously impact the economy of Jammu and Kashmir. The rinsing incidents of online fraud can erode the trust in digital transactions, which in return hinder the region’s economic progress as well. Since the modern era has taken over, the people need to understand their role very well to make sure that the elements trying to loot the people and simultaneously erode the trust of people in digital transactions are exposed and prevented from making the situation more vulnerable for the people. Therefore, the joint efforts are needed at this juncture to preserve the dignity, trust, and well-being of society by putting an end to cybercrimes so that the region’s economy is strengthened and the innocent people could heave a sigh of relief.
