The world celebrates International Mother Language Day with Jammu and Kashmir witnessing a number of events throughout the day with an aim to highlight the significance of the mother tounge. However, the million dollar question remain whether the languages can be preserved through the events on the particular day. There is a need to understand that the Mother Language has its own significance as it reflects a person’s identity at any platform. But, one has to play his/her role in preserving the language for the future generations as the people need to teach their younger generation their Mother language from their home. One cannot expect the preservation of mother language without the efforts from the common masses. From the homes to schools, the mother language should be made a compulsory subject in order to incline the new generation towards the language. Besides, the government also needs to play it’s role in preserving the mother languages at different platforms so that the people are inclined towards the languages. It is high time for the society in general and the parents as well as the guardians in particular to teach mother language to their wards and not to prefer teaching other languages to them so that the cultural identity is preserved for the masses.
