Fragile peace along LoC

The recent meeting between the two armies of Indian and Pakistani in Poonch has offered a fleeting glimpse of hope that peace might prevail along the volatile Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir once again. The border areas were witnessing a lasting peace since February 2021 as the ceasefire has brought major relief to the people living in these areas. The border dwellers were witnessing a major relief from the sounds of shells; the people were hearing the sounds of beating drums, enjoying the livelihood with the arrival of tourists, making their lives more comfortable. However, with the recent back-to-back incidents of ceasefire violations, the armies of both the countries met again in Poonch recently and decided to stick to the February 2021 ceasefire agreement. Despite this diplomatic overture, an uneasy calm now hovers over the region, where decades of tension, conflict, and uncertainty have left an indelible mark on the landscape and the people. The flag meeting in Poonch is a step forward in addressing the recurring violations of the ceasefire along the LoC. After months of rising tensions, with frequent skirmishes and exchanges of fire resulting in the loss of lives and property, this meeting signalled a much-needed respite for the people living in the border areas, who have borne the brunt of the ongoing military confrontations. For the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the situation remains fragile. The uneasy calm that currently prevails along the LoC is not enough to assure them of a peaceful future. It is incumbent upon both nations, with the support of the international community, to work toward a more durable and comprehensive peace.
