Ganderbal, Mar 1: The vital bridge connecting Hayan, Palpora, Ninhama, Tangdaji and other adjoining villages with the main highway and district headquarters in Ganderbal has turned into a death trap, posing a serious threat to human lives.
According to local residents, the only approach bridge over the gushing waters of Nallah Sind has not been repaired for more than a decade.
“The bridge is non-operational, causing severe inconvenience to the general public. Common people, transporters, and others are facing immense difficulties in reaching different destinations,” said a local.
Years ago, the construction of a concrete bridge was initiated, but it was abandoned after only two pillars were erected, reportedly due to lack of funds, residents said. They believe that instead of wasting money on incomplete structures, the authorities should have prioritised repairing the existing footbridge.
Locals said the damaged bridge poses a risk, especially for children. “We suffer during bad weather and medical emergencies,” they said.
Residents urge the district administration to take immediate steps to resolve the issue before any unfortunate incident occurs.
During the recent snowfall, crossing the bridge became extremely difficult, they said, adding that the authorities must urgently repair the bridge.
Locals have appealed to the concerned MLA to intervene and address the pressing issue. “We hope our MLA will take swift action to resolve this critical issue,” they said.
