Srinagar, Mar 19: A report tabled in Rajya Sabha has revealed that Jammu and Kashmir has struggled to fully utilize the allocated funds for Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) SBM(G).
The report tabled in the upper house of the parliament, states that J&K is grappling with Rs 185.65 crore in unspent funds in JJM and SBM (G), raising concerns about execution delays, fund absorption, and the long-term sustainability of these programs.
These concerns were highlighted following a meeting of the standing committee held on water resources.
According to the report J&K has not fully utilized the allocated funds with unspent balances accumulating over the years. As of February 12, 2025, the unspent balance stands at Rs 185.65 crore, with Rs 130.65 crore under JJM and Rs 55.00 crore under SBM(G).
The report states that between October 2022 and December 2024, the UT has faced slow progress in retrofitting single-pit toilets under SBM(G), which has hindered the pace of improving sanitation infrastructure.
While Jammu and Kashmir has successfully provided tap water connections to 96.06% of Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) and 6,216 schools under JJM, the UT still faces significant challenges in waste management and sanitation infrastructure.
The slow progress in establishing Liquid Waste Management facilities, community biogas plants, and retrofitting single-pit toilets reflects the need for more focused attention and faster execution to meet the ambitious targets of these national missions. (KNO)
