Srinagar, Mar 24: A significant percentage of schools in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh continue to implement the three-language formula as part of their curriculum, as per data from the Ministry of Education. However, student enrollment trends indicate varying levels of language adoption in both the Union Territories.
According to the latest figures, 81.2% of schools in J&K and 77.4% in Ladakh offer three languages, while 15.7% of schools in J&K and 21.4% in Ladakh teach two languages. A smaller percentage, 3.1% in J&K and 1.2% in Ladakh, offer only one language in their curriculum, reads the data.
In terms of student enrollment, 83.4% of students in J&K and 84.4% in Ladakh are enrolled in schools offering three languages, while 14.1% in J&K and 15.2% in Ladakh study in institutions with two-language instruction. Only 2.5% of students in J&K and 0.5% in Ladakh attend schools offering a single language.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 continues to emphasize flexibility in the three-language formula, ensuring that at least two of the three languages taught are Indian languages. The policy aims to promote multilingualism while allowing students to change their language choices in Grade 6 or 7, provided they attain proficiency in three languages by the end of secondary school.
Meanwhile, in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across Tamil Nadu, which have a uniform education scheme under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 86 Hindi and 65 Sanskrit faculty are currently working, with 24 part-time contractual Tamil teachers engaged based on student demand.
