Growing population, growing challenges

Jammu and Kashmir, traditionally known for its moderate and pleasant summers, is now expected to face an unusual and alarming challenge—an intense heat wave as predicted by the weather department. With meteorological departments forecasting soaring temperatures across the region, it is essential for citizens to take this warning seriously and adopt precautionary measures to safeguard their health and well-being. The effects of extreme heat are not to be underestimated. Prolonged exposure can lead to heat exhaustion, dehydration, sunstroke, and in severe cases, even fatalities—especially among the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. In regions like Jammu, where temperatures are expected to spike sharply, the situation demands immediate public awareness and action. Authorities have already issued advisories, urging people to stay indoors during peak heat hours, stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. But the responsibility doesn’t lie with the government alone. Communities must play a proactive role. For those engaged in outdoor labor or travel, protective clothing, head coverings, and regular breaks in the shade can prevent serious health complications. Farmers, too, need support and guidance to protect themselves and their crops during this period of intense heat. Climate change is making such weather anomalies more frequent. The current situation should serve as a wake-up call. We must begin treating extreme weather events as public health challenges, not just seasonal discomforts. While we cannot control the weather, we can certainly control our response to it. With timely precautions and community cooperation, we can minimize the risks and ensure that Jammu and Kashmir stays safe and healthy through this heat wave.
