Eid-ul-Adha in Kashmir: A festive blend of faith, culture, community spirit

The recent boat capsizing incident in Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake, which tragically claimed the life of a youth, has once shown the dangers of ignoring safety protocols on water bodies. A symbol of serenity and a magnet for tourists, Dal Lake has now become the site of a heartbreaking accident—one that could have been prevented had the weather advisories and safety regulations been followed with the seriousness. This is not the first time a recreational outing has turned into a tragedy in Kashmir’s water bodies. In the case of Dal Lake, warnings had been issued against venturing out due to inclement weather. Despite this, boats were still operational, risking not just property but precious lives. It is a sobering reminder that advisories—whether issued by the Meteorological Department or local administration—are not mere formalities. They are lifelines meant to protect. One fails to understand why these warnings are so frequently being ignored? Is it complacency, economic pressure on local boat operators, or a systemic failure to enforce guidelines? Whatever the reason, the cost is now painfully clear. The loss of a young life should stir both authorities and citizens into urgent reflection and action. The government must intensify monitoring and enforcement. Shikara operators and water transport services should be strictly regulated during adverse weather conditions. There must also be compulsory life jackets, periodic safety drills, and clear accountability for violations. The precious lives can be saved if the advisories and regulations are followed in letter and spirit.
