Srinagar, May 19: Residents of remote Bani area in Kathua district of Jammu division have expressed strong resentment over the inadequate public transport facilities, citing that only one Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) vehicle is currently operating on the crucial Bani-Jammu route.
Covering a distance of over 250 kilometres, the route connects the mountainous town of Bani to the winter capital of Jammu.
Despite its significance, the lack of sufficient transport options has left commuters facing immense difficulties.
“The journey from Bani to Jammu is long and tiring. With just one RTC bus available along with few private buses, passengers are forced to wait for days or rely on costly options,” Mohammad Aslam, a local resident said.
“This single RTC vehicle along with few private buses cannot cater to the needs of the entire area,” he said.
Another local, Rekha Devi, added, “We request the authorities to deploy more vehicles on this route. Students, elderly people, and patients are the worst affected due to the lack of reliable transportation.”
She said that most people in the area belong to financially weak families and aren’t able to bear the expenses of other vehicles.
Locals complain that overcrowding in the lone bus is a routine issue, and during emergencies or harsh weather conditions, travel becomes almost impossible.
The current situation has also affected the local economy, with traders and workers unable to commute conveniently.
They said that this is a vast area and needs better traffic facilities but is being ignored due to unknown reasons.
People from the region are urging the J&K Transport Department to immediately address the issue by increasing the number of SRTC buses on the route and ensuring regular service.
“This is not just about transportation; it’s about connectivity and development,” said Mudasar Ali, a social activist from Bani. “We hope the government will take our demands seriously and provide relief to the people.”
Locals have sought the attention of concerned minister and other authorities in this regard.
