In the congested areas, the number of registered vehicles has been increasing with each passing day, but the removal of illegal encroachments on the roadsides have remained a distant dream in Jammu and Kashmir as the maximum of the roads in the region, especially in the major markets, remain under illegal occupation by the street vendors or the shopkeepers, leading to the mess on the roads. The timely intervention and the removal of the illegal encroachments would have brought major relief to the commuters as well as the pedestrians. However, the concerned agencies have not taken concrete measures so far, thus ending up in the traffic chaos as well as the hardships to the people on the ground. The markets, roadsides and the footpaths in the busiest places across Srinagar and elsewhere continue to remain under illegal occupation by the street vendors and shopkeepers. But, the concerned officials hardly bother to look into the issues and its impact on the common commuters and pedestrians. The demands for the removal of roadside encroachments, especially on the footpaths have always been ignored by the authorities by taking no measures in this regard. This non-seriousness has also resulted in the wastage of huge public exchequer as a huge amount spent on the construction of new designable footpaths and roadsides have failed to achieve the cause of beautifying the roads. Therefore, in order to end the miseries of the people, the authorities need to take concrete measures to remove the illegal encroachments on the roads so that the rising number of vehicles can be accommodated with ease without any hindrances.
