Preserving Kashmiri heritage

Saving precious lives

The Smart city buses introduced in Srinagar have brought major relief to the common masses across the City and thus the demand for its expansion has gone louder. The pleas have been heard as the smart bus services have been expanded and introduced into the rural areas, marking a progressive and much-needed intervention in Jammu and Kashmir’s public transport infrastructure. While urban centers like Srinagar have already begun reaping the benefits of tech-enabled, efficient mobility solutions, this new phase aims to extend the same convenience to the region’s often-neglected rural pockets, ushering in not just better connectivity, but also social and economic empowerment. For far-too-long, rural residents, especially in remote districts surrounding Srinagar, have struggled with inadequate, unreliable and infrequent transport options. For them, something as routine as visiting a hospital, attending school or college or accessing government services often meant hours of travel under uncertain conditions. The expansion of smart buses equipped with GPS, real-time tracking, cashless ticketing and greater frequency, has the potential to dramatically change that reality. Two groups stand out as immediate beneficiaries of this initiative including students and patients. Thousands of rural students commute daily to Srinagar for education, from school-level institutions to universities and coaching centers. For them, smart buses offer not only regularity but also safety, affordability, and predictability—critical factors that can directly impact their academic success and aspirations. Similarly, rural patients often require specialized treatment that is available only in Srinagar’s hospitals. Frequent and affordable transport to medical facilities could mean earlier diagnoses, consistent follow-ups, and less financial burden on families who otherwise resort to costly private taxis or, worse, skip visits altogether. The expansion of smart bus services into rural Jammu and Kashmir is more than a transport upgrade. However, it needs to be ensured that the services will continue so that the people could heave a sigh of relief.
