Srinagar, Jun 17: Amid reports of delays in the macadamisation of roads in the Kashmir division this year, the Public Works Department on Tuesday clarified that the process across central and south Kashmir has already commenced and will be completed by August 15.
Chief Engineer PW (R&B) Central Kashmir, Er Sajad Naqeeb said all macadamisation works have started across south and central Kashmir, and the department is aiming to cover around 320 kilometres of road length in central Kashmir alone this year. “Additionally, under C&T, NABARD, and the UT Sector, the department aims to cover at least 328 km this year. The macadamisation shall be completed by August 15 this year, positively,” he said.
Naqeeb added that an amount of Rs 105 crore will be spent on the macadamisation works and that the work commenced on June 13 this year.
When asked about the control and assessment of these works, the Chief Engineer said the department has a three-tier mechanism to ensure strict quality assessment. “We will have the quality control system in place at the division level, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Executive Engineer, followed by quality assessment supervised by the Superintending Engineers of the department,” he said. “We will also have State Quality Control mechanisms in place. A strict vigil is being kept at the macadam plants by the department’s engineering wing.”
Naqeeb said that after the macadam is laid, the Department of Quality Control, also known as DIQC, will conduct quality tests to check various parameters of the macadam. (KNO)
