Boulevard road can’t wait

Mathematics is fun

The road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir have become a silent epidemic, claiming lives with alarming regularity and leaving families devastated. The beauty of the roads in the picturesque Jammu & Kashmir is far too often marred by the bloodstains of tragedy. There is an urgent need for coordinated and sustained action to prevent further loss of life. In recent years, the Union Territory has witnessed a disturbing rise in fatal road accidents. Reckless driving, poor road conditions, overloading of vehicles, lack of enforcement of traffic rules and insufficient emergency response systems have all contributed to this grave situation. The combination of narrow, winding roads and overloaded transport vehicles has proven particularly deadly. Lives are being lost not due to natural calamities, but preventable human negligence. One of the most pressing issues is the poor state of road infrastructure. Many rural roads remain unpaved, ill-maintained, and without safety features such as guardrails, warning signage, or speed breakers. Authorities must prioritize upgrading these roads, especially those that serve as lifelines between remote villages and towns. Equally critical is the enforcement of traffic laws. Overspeeding, rash driving and driving under the influence are rampant, with little fear of consequence. Regular checks, use of speed-detecting equipment, installation of surveillance cameras, and stricter penalties must become standard. Public transport vehicles, in particular, should be subjected to frequent inspections, ensuring both mechanical fitness and adherence to capacity limits. Education and awareness campaigns also need to play a central role. Drivers must be sensitized to the risks of careless driving, especially in hilly and fog-prone areas. Schools, community centers, and local media can become platforms to promote road safety consciousness among citizens of all ages.
