Keep Kashmir connected

A quiet revolution is unfolding on playgrounds, stadiums and makeshift fields across Jammu and Kashmir. This revolution is not driven by political slogans or security operations, but driven by the energy, dreams and camaraderie of young people coming together through sports. Over the past few years, sports have emerged as a powerful vehicle of peace, unity and brotherhood in Jammu and Kashmir. From cricket matches drawing cheering crowds in rural villages to football tournaments uniting youth from diverse communities, the language of sport is transcending the boundaries of fear, distrust, and division. The footballs and cricket bats now take center stage in J&K. In the laughter of children playing volleyball, in the determination of girls training in martial arts and in the roar of the crowd during local tournaments, we witness reclamation of normalcy and hope. The administration, with active support from grassroots organizations and civil society, has recognized the transformative potential of sports. Initiatives such as upgraded infrastructure, increased funding for local clubs and talent identification programs have created real opportunities for young athletes to dream bigger and more importantly, to dream together. National-level exposure and scholarships are not just rewards; they are bridges that connect youth in J&K to the broader national mainstream. More than just a physical activity, sport has become a psychosocial balm, building confidence, promoting discipline and creating shared identities. On the field, religious, regional and linguistic differences blur. A teammate is a teammate. A goal is a goal. Victory is shared and so is defeat. This natural forging of bonds across communities has played a quiet yet impactful role in de-radicalization and emotional healing in a post-conflict society.
