Srinagar, Aug 5: The anti-terror operation in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir entered its fifth consecutive day on Tuesday, with security forces continuing efforts to neutralize the terrorists holed up in the Akhal forest area.
Officials said the encounter remains active, with intermittent exchange of fire between security forces and militants. To prevent civilian harm, some villagers requiring medical attention were evacuated from the area under tight security.
“All necessary resources, including drones and helicopters, are being deployed to track and eliminate the remaining terrorists,” a senior official said.
The gunfight began on Friday evening, when security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the dense forest belt. After an initial exchange of fire, the operation was paused overnight.
It resumed on Saturday morning, leading to the killing of two terrorists. At least two security personnel were injured during the ongoing operation.
Additional reinforcements were rushed to the area over the weekend, and the cordon was further tightened. The identities and group affiliations of the slain militants are yet to be confirmed.
Security forces remain on high alert as the operation continues in the region. (KINS)
