Kulgam, Aug 6: At least two people lost their lives while two others sustained injuries on Wednesday after a tree and a boulder fell on a tent in the upper reaches of Waltango Kund belt in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials said.
An official said that the incident occurred when an alpine tree and a boulder, dislodged by gusty winds, crashed onto the tent sheltering a nomadic family.
“Two members of the family died on the spot,” the official said.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Shafi Bokad, son of Mehboob Bokad, and his daughter-in-law Rishma Jan, residents of Mahore, Reasi, who were currently staying in Kund Waltango forests.
The injured have been identified as Zakir Ahmad Bokad alias Farooq, son of Mohammad Shafi Bokad, and Sakeena Begum, wife of Mohammad Shafi Bokad. They have been shifted to the Emergency Hospital in Qazigund for treatment.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Athar Aamir Khan, said that early in the morning they received information about a tragic incident in the upper areas of Kund.
“A joint team of police, revenue officials and SDRF rushed to the spot and began the rescue operation. Unfortunately, two people lost their lives, and two others were injured and taken to a nearby hospital,” he said.
Meanwhile, police have taken cognizance of the incident.
