Anantnag, Aug 13: The serene Sheikhpura area in Sallar hamlet of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, often referred to as ‘Chota Gulmarg’, is fast becoming a favourite escape for visitors—but despite its breathtaking landscapes, it remains deprived of basic tourist facilities.
Nestled just a few hundred metres from Bijbehara–Pahalgam road, Sheikhpura greets travellers with sprawling green pastures, dense alpine forests and uninterrupted views of nature’s grandeur.
The road leading to the spot is flanked by towering conifers, making it a visual delight for miles.
“Hundreds of people come here, especially during the summer, to escape the heat,” said a local resident, noting that many school groups also choose Sheikhpura for picnics. “But because there are no facilities like washrooms or eateries, visitors often cut short their stay and head back to Sallar to buy food or other essentials.”
A social activist Muzzafar Ahmad believes Sheikhpura’s tourism potential could be a game changer for the area’s struggling economy. “Most families here are financially weak. If the government includes Sheikhpura on the tourism map, it will open up employment opportunities, boost local trade and bring overall development,” he said.
Shabir Ahmad, another resident, voiced frustration over unfulfilled promises. “We have repeatedly appealed to the authorities to promote this place and even received assurances, but nothing has happened on the ground. If developed like other tourist destinations, this spot could attract thousands more visitors.”
Residents now appealed to the Deputy Commissioner Anantnag and the Director of Tourism to visit Sheikhpura themselves and witness its natural splendour. “Once they see it, they will understand why this gem should not remain hidden,” the locals said.
