Srinagar, Aug 14: Flash floods occurred in several locations across Kashmir on Thursday, while intermittent light rains continued in other parts, including Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. The ongoing rainfall has contributed to a dip in temperatures across the valley.
According to reports, flash floods affected areas such as Kawcherwan and Kangan, Gund, Sumbal, Frislan, and Batkoot in Pahalgam, Qazi Nallah in Karnah, Ichoo Nallah in Kokernag, and others.
Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng confirmed these incidents, saying a massive flash flood occurred in the Saspol area of Leh along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway.
The water level in Sheshnag Nallah and Betaab Valley exceeded the danger mark today, reaching 5.23 feet, which is above the critical level of 5.09 feet, raising concerns of potential flooding nearby.
Authorities have advised residents to stay away from rivers and streams as a precaution. Keng said that “nothing alarming” is currently happening, as the surge appears localised and is being monitored continuously. He urged caution but assured there is no immediate threat.
Meteorological officials said that with vigilance and timely alerts, the situation remains under control. Water levels are under close watch, and rescue teams are on standby in case of emergencies, they said.
Rainfall persisted intermittently throughout the day in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir. The IMD’s detailed report states that Pahalgam received 33.6 mm of rain, Gulmarg recorded the highest with 47.2 mm by 5:30 PM. Srinagar saw 1.5 mm; Qazigund 0.4 mm; Kupwara 1.8 mm; and Kokernag 0.4 mm.
The weather forecast predicts light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across many areas of Jammu division until tomorrow, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in Reasi, Udhampur, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, and Ramban. Some parts of Kashmir may experience brief, intense showers and gusty winds.
The IMD further forecasts generally hot and humid weather with brief showers on August 16, followed by continued light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in many places on August 17 and 18, with heavier rainfall in parts of Jammu division.
An official advisory warns of the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas until tomorrow. Residents have been advised to stay away from water bodies, river embankments, and loose structures to avoid accidents.
