Srinagar, Aug 19: Former Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy has been declared the joint Opposition candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced on Tuesday, describing the contest as an “ideological battle” for the country’s constitutional values.
Justice Reddy, who earlier served as the first Lokayukta of Goa and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre, Hyderabad, will file his nomination on August 21.
Kharge said the decision to field Reddy was taken unanimously by all INDIA bloc partners. “Whenever democracy and the Constitution are under attack, Opposition parties come together. I am happy that we have unanimously agreed on a common candidate, which is a significant achievement for democracy,” Kharge stated.
Hailing Reddy’s judicial legacy, the Congress chief said, “He is one of India’s most distinguished and progressive jurists. As a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and later as a Supreme Court judge, Justice Reddy has consistently upheld social, economic, and political justice.”
Kharge further described him as a “pro-poor jurist” whose landmark judgments protected the Constitution and fundamental rights. “In many of his rulings, he stood firmly with the poor and marginalized while safeguarding constitutional principles,” he added. (KINS)
