Kulgam, Aug 22: Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party president Syed Altaf Bukhari on Friday said that political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir should not be afraid of the new bill that seeks the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers or Ministers facing criminal charges, which has now been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.
Speaking to reporters in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, Bukhari said corruption levels in Jammu and Kashmir are comparatively far lower than in many other states of India. “There is less corruption here as compared to other states, so our leaders should not be scared of this bill,” he remarked.
Terming the legislation a positive step for accountability, the Apni Party chief said, “As far as the eradication of corruption is concerned, this bill is very good. But if it is being passed only to harass opposition leaders, then it is not good for democracy.”
He stressed that transparency and fairness must remain the cornerstone of governance, and any law aimed at cleansing the system should be applied uniformly without political bias.
Bukhari’s statement comes amid a wider political debate over the bill, with critics alleging that it could be misused to target dissenting voices, while the government maintains it will strengthen democratic accountability. [KNT]
