Kudos to Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan for being elected as 15thVice President of India securing 452 votes in the election. He has won by a margin of 152 votes, surpassing expectations with his strong support base. Radhakrishnan’s election is seen as a symbol of clean politics, and he is expected to uphold this image, promoting transparency and accountability in governance. He is a seasoned politician with a rich background in governance and politics. His elevation to this role marks a significant milestone in Indian politics, particularly given his roots in Tamil Nadu, a state where the BJP has traditionally faced challenges in gaining traction.
Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnanwas serving as the Governor of Maharashtra since July 2024 before being named as the NDA’s Vice Presidential nominee. Radhakrishnan has had a long association with the RSS and BJP, starting as an RSS swayamsevak at 16. He served as a two-term Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore and held key positions in the Tamil Nadu BJP. He has served as Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, and Maharashtra, showcasing his governance record and legislative experience. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. A sports enthusiast, he excelled in table tennis and took keen interest in cricket and volleyball. He has also represented India on several international delegations across Asia, Europe and North America.
With over four decades of experience in politics, he has developed a pragmatic approach to leadership, evident in his ability to navigate complex political landscapes. PM Narendra Modi said Radhakrishnan “will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse”. Radhakrishnan’s experience as Governor and his understanding of parliamentary procedures will be crucial in ensuring productive debates and minimizing disruptions in the Upper House. He is expected to encourage constructive discussions, fostering a platform for policy-making rather than political confrontation. As Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Radhakrishnan will need to balance his political background with impartiality, ensuring fair representation of all parties. Unlike his predecessor, Jagdeep Dhankhar, known for his vocal and impulsive nature, Radhakrishnan is perceived as a mellow and inclusive leader, which could foster a more collaborative environment in the Rajya Sabha. He has played a key role in shaping the BJP’s presence in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He led a 93-day, 19,000-km ‘Rath Yatra’ across Tamil Nadu to highlight issues like river-linking projects, eradication of untouchability, and combating terrorism and has also contributed to campaigns for tuberculosis eradication in Jharkhand, Puducherry, and Maharashtra.
