Emphasises unified strategy to tackle drug menace

Srinagar, Sep 15: A meeting of District Level Committee on Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) was Monday held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo here to review anti-drug measures and strategizing further intensifying efforts against drug abuse and trafficking in the district.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sandeep Chakravarthy was also present in the meeting.
The meeting deliberated on key issues, including intensifying anti-drug awareness campaigns, further strengthening enforcement measures against drug peddlers and its trafficking to curb drug abuse more effectively and tightening the noose around drug peddlers through coordinated and intensified efforts.
In addition, efforts of district administration towards enhanced treatment and rehabilitation facilities for people affected by substance abuse were also discussed.
At the outset, DC laid emphasis on implementing a well-coordinated and unified approach to effectively address the drug menace and protect society from its detrimental effects.
DC emphasized for intensifying sustained IEC campaigns across the district to sensitize masses particularly youth about detrimental and harmful effects of drug abuse. He also laid stress on strengthening Addiction Treatment Facilities (ATFs) at SMHS and SKIMS Bemina to ensure better treatment facilities and proper rehabilitation of drug victims.
He also stressed that curbing the menace requires a comprehensive approach involving strict enforcement, preventive measures, community awareness and effective rehabilitation.
During the meeting, it was informed that efforts are underway to achieve 100% computerised billing at retail and wholesale pharmacies across the City. While security measures are also being enhanced at ATFs in the district.
Superintendent of Police emphasised that as many as 89 cases have been registered in Srinagar district during current year and 165 drug peddlers have been arrested including 46 PITs. Large quantities of contraband substances were also seized/recovered including brown sugar, Heroin, Charas, Psychotropic Syrup bottles, PSY capsules/tablets, Fuki, bang/poppy straw/cannabis were destroyed, in addition to the cash recovery from the drug peddlers.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Aadil Fareed; Superintendent of Police, Umar Shah; SDM East, Chief Education Officer, Assistant Labour Commissioner, District Social Welfare Officer, and officers of Excise, Drug Control Organization, DYS&S, Heads of ATFs at SMHS, SKIMS Bemina and other concerned.
