The Srinagar Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) recent move to intensify enforcement at the bypass toll post is a timely and commendable step toward streamlining livestock taxation and safeguarding public health. With unchecked livestock movement posing risks to both revenue collection and urban sanitation, this initiative reflects a serious commitment to better governance. For years, livestock has entered Srinagar without adequate regulation, resulting in the evasion of municipal taxes and raising concerns over health and hygiene. Animals transported without proper health checks can contribute to the spread of zoonotic diseases, contaminate food chains, and strain already limited sanitation infrastructure. By regulating this inflow, SMC is rightly placing both public health and fiscal accountability at the forefront. This enforcement will ensure that taxes due to the municipality are collected fairly and systematically, adding to vital revenue streams required for city maintenance and development.
