Empowering J&K youth

The youth of Jammu and Kashmir represent a reservoir of energy, talent, and promise. Harnessing this potential is critical for shaping a progressive, peaceful, and prosperous future for the region. In this context, the recent achievement of the Youth Services and Sports Department engaging around 35.5 lakh youth in its activities last year is a remarkable milestone. From grassroots sporting events to community-based youth development programs, this large-scale participation highlights a positive shift in the region’s socio-cultural landscape. It reflects growing enthusiasm among young people to be part of constructive and disciplined pursuits. Moreover, such activities promote physical fitness, mental well-being, leadership, teamwork and social harmony, all crucial for holistic development. Now, with efforts underway to increase this number to 45 lakh youth in the current year, the focus must remain on both quantity and quality. Expanding infrastructure, upgrading playgrounds, ensuring trained coaches and integrating sports with education must be prioritised. Equally important is inclusive participation, reaching young people in remote and underdeveloped areas including girls and differently-abled youth. Additionally, linking sports and youth programs with career pathways through scholarships, talent scouting and vocational training can further motivate participation and reduce vulnerability to negative influences. This mass engagement also holds deeper significance for Jammu and Kashmir. At a time when the region is on a path of recovery and renewal, youth-centric initiatives are powerful tools for social transformation and nation-building. By giving the young a sense of purpose and platform to excel, the government is investing in long-term peace and progress. With sustained efforts, community support, and proper implementation, the dream of engaging 45 lakh youth is not only achievable but is essential.
