Ensure winter preparedness

As temperatures begin to plummet across Kashmir, the familiar challenges of winter loom large. From power outages and blocked roads to disrupted healthcare and supply chains, the season brings with it a host of difficulties that demand serious attention. Each year, the region braces for harsh conditions, yet winter preparedness often falls short, leaving citizens to bear the brunt. This year, the government must act with urgency and foresight. Ensuring uninterrupted electricity should be a top priority, especially for vulnerable populations. Backup systems and quick-response teams must be in place to handle outages, particularly in snow-bound areas. Equally crucial is maintaining road connectivity. Snow clearance machinery, de-icing materials, and sufficient manpower should be deployed before heavy snowfall hits. Delays in road clearance not only isolate communities but also hamper emergency services and essential supplies. Healthcare systems must be winter-ready, with adequate stocks of medicines, functioning heating systems in hospitals, and contingency plans for remote regions. Strengthening mobile health units and telemedicine can help bridge access gaps. The public distribution system also needs reinforcement. Essentials like LPG, kerosene and ration supplies must be stocked in advance, especially in high-altitude and far-flung areas that get cut off during snowfall. Technology must play a central role, accurate weather forecasts, early warnings and timely public advisories can help communities prepare better. Local bodies and panchayats should be empowered to respond swiftly to localised issues, supported by district administrations. Winter is inevitable, but hardship doesn’t have to be. A proactive and coordinated approach from the government can make all the difference. The time to act is now, before the snow begins to fall in earnest and the Valley is once again tested by nature’s cold hand.
