The SARAS Mela, being organized frequently in Jammu & Kashmir, is a vibrant platform for empowerment, especially for women entrepreneurs across the Union Territory. Under the aegis of the Ministry of Rural Development, the SARAS (Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society) Mela serves as a bridge between rural women artisans and national markets, allowing them to showcase and sell their products directly to consumers. In J&K, where traditional skills in handicrafts, handlooms, and organic produce are deeply rooted in rural life, such platforms are proving to be game changers. The participation of Self Help Groups (SHGs), especially women-led ones, is not only a display of talent and entrepreneurship but also a reflection of changing socio-economic dynamics in the region. For many of these women, the Mela represents more than income, it is a path to independence, self-confidence, and recognition. These events help them step beyond the constraints of geography, limited market access, and traditional gender roles. Every product sold is a story of resilience, skill, and ambition. Moreover, SARAS Mela provides valuable exposure to market trends, consumer preferences, packaging, branding and digital payment systems. This knowledge transfer is essential for long-term sustainability and competitiveness. The government’s support in organizing such events must be lauded, but it must also be consistent and complemented with training, access to credit, and digital tools. Empowering women at the grassroots level is smart economics. As we witness the growing success of SARAS Melas in J&K, it is clear that when women thrive, communities prosper. Investing in women entrepreneurs is investing in the future of Jammu & Kashmir.
