Srinagar, Oct 18: With Diwali just a few days away, the markets across Srinagar and other parts of the valley are buzzing with life, colour and festive cheer.
The festival of lights, which will be celebrated on Monday, has brought joy and excitement to both shopkeepers and shoppers as the valley prepares for the grand celebration.
According to reports, from the beautiful Lal Chowk to the lanes of Dal Gate, Polo View and Residency Road, shops have been decked with vibrant lights, candles, Diyas and decorative pieces.
Moreover, the aroma of freshly prepared sweets fills the air as people line up to buy traditional favourites like sweets.
“We started decorating our shop a week ago and since this morning, there has been a continuous rush of customers,” said, owner of a bakery in Srinagar. He said this year; the response feels much better, with a sense of happiness among people.
Meanwhile, vendors selling firecrackers and decorative lights echoed similar sentiments. “After quiet years, Diwali sales have picked up. People are buying more sparklers, candles and colourful lights this time,” said Rakesh Kumar, a stall owner from Lal Chowk Srinagar.
Similarly, the festive mood is also drawing admiration from locals. “Even though Diwali is not widely celebrated by everyone here, the festive lights and joy make the whole city look beautiful. It feels like a collective celebration,” said a college student from Rajbagh.
Similar excitement has been reported from Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam and Jammu division, where families are seen doing last-minute shopping.
It is worth mentioning, Diwali, or Deepavali, is one of India’s most significant festivals, symbolising the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Traditionally celebrated with lamps, sweets and fireworks, the festival also signifies new beginnings and family togetherness.
Meanwhile, the administration has urged citizens to celebrate safely and responsibly by avoiding loud firecrackers and encouraging eco-friendly celebrations.
