Pulwama, Oct 25: The residents of Pulwama town have expressed strong resentment over the administration’s failure to clear the large mounds of garbage still lying along the Circular Road, months after the site was officially declared closed.
The area, once a bustling route for commuters, has now turned into a foul-smelling garbage dump, causing distress to residents, commuters, and traders alike.
Locals said that despite repeated assurances from the authorities, the waste – consisting of household garbage, plastic waste, and construction debris – continues to pile up, spreading a nauseating stench and attracting stray dogs and insects.
They accused the Municipal Committee Pulwama of showing complete negligence. “Officials had promised to clear the waste immediately after closing the site, but months have passed and nothing has been done,” said Abdul Hameed, a local. “We are forced to live with the unbearable smell every single day. The air here is toxic, and it feels like no one cares.”
Shopkeepers along the stretch said the situation has badly impacted their livelihood. “Customers avoid this area because of the stench,” said Younis Ahmad, a grocery store owner. “Even people passing by cover their faces. It’s embarrassing for us as business owners.”
Residents living nearby said the unhygienic conditions are posing serious health risks, particularly to children and the elderly. “Flies and mosquitoes have made life miserable,” said Haleema, who lives near the garbage dump. “We can’t even open windows or dry clothes outside. The administration must take swift action before diseases start spreading.”
The residents have urged the Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama and higher authorities to personally intervene in the matter and ensure that the garbage is cleared without any further delay. “If the administration could close the site after our protests, it should also ensure it is cleaned. Half-hearted measures only add to our suffering,” they said.
