Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

The journalism fraternity in Jammu and Kashmir has lost one of its most respected voices with the untimely demise of Tariq Ahmad Bhat, senior journalist and Bureau Head of The Week magazine, who passed away in Srinagar today following a massive cardiac arrest. His sudden departure leaves behind a void that will be difficult to fill for his colleagues, readers and all who valued his calm wisdom, clarity of thought and unwavering commitment to truth. Over the decades, Tariq Ahmad Bhat distinguished himself as a journalist of rare integrity. He stood out for his balanced reporting and humane perspective. His stories reflected deep insight into the socio-political realities of Jammu and Kashmir, always striving to give voice to the people behind the headlines. With quiet dignity, he represented a generation of journalists who saw their profession as a public service, not a pursuit of power or fame. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tariq was known for his humility, warmth and mentorship to younger reporters. Many in the field remember him as a guiding figure who encouraged honest journalism, rigorous verification and empathy toward every subject. His passing is not only a personal loss to those who knew him but also a profound loss to the larger media community that values fearless yet responsible reporting. As we mourn his loss, it is important to honor his legacy by upholding the principles he embodied truth, fairness and dedication to the people’s story. The best tribute to Tariq Ahmad Bhat would be to continue the work he so passionately believed in: telling Kashmir’s story with honesty and heart. May his soul rest in peace and may his words continue to inspire those who follow in his path.
