Empowering students

The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has proposed a significant reform by introducing dual-level mathematics examinations for Class 10 students. Under this system, students will have the freedom to choose between Basic and Standard mathematics, aligning their subject load with their aptitude and future academic plans. This progressive shift, already practised in several national boards, marks a thoughtful step toward making the education system more inclusive, student-friendly and pragmatic. For years, mathematics has been one of the subjects that determine academic confidence among students. Many capable students, particularly those inclined toward humanities or life sciences, often feel discouraged by the one-size-fits-all structure of the current exam pattern. The proposed dual-level system will help reduce anxiety and give students space to perform to their potential. Those opting for Basic Mathematics can meet the required competency without feeling overburdened, while students interested in engineering, physical sciences or mathematics-based careers can choose Standard Mathematics to build a stronger foundation. Beyond academic comfort, this reform reflects an understanding of the diverse learning needs of students across Jammu and Kashmir. The region’s varied socio-economic and geographical challenges mean that not all learners have equal access to resources or quality tutoring. Offering two levels ensures that students are not unfairly disadvantaged by their circumstances and can make informed choices based on guidance and their own aspirations. However, for this initiative to succeed, schools must ensure proper counselling so students and parents understand the long-term implications of their choice. Teachers will require training to handle differentiated teaching effectively, and JKBOSE must create clear pathways for students who may later wish to switch tracks. Overall, the dual-level mathematics proposal is a forward-looking reform that prioritises student well-being while upholding academic rigour. It is a step toward a more flexible, equitable and empowering education system in Jammu and Kashmir.
