Srinagar’s frequent traffic congestion has emerged as one of the civic challenges, testing the patience of commuters and straining the city’s already burdened infrastructure. While rapid urbanisation, rising vehicle numbers and limited road space are undeniable factors, a major contributor to the daily chaos is rampant traffic violations. In this context, a sustained and strict drive against traffic violations has become unavoidable. From wrong-side driving and illegal parking to jumping signals and encroaching footpaths, indiscipline on Srinagar’s roads has virtually become the norm. Key arteries, especially around hospitals, markets, schools and government offices, often turn into bottlenecks during peak hours. Ambulances and emergency vehicles are frequently forced to inch their way through congestion, putting lives at risk. Such scenes underline the urgent need for robust enforcement of traffic rules. The Traffic Police have, in recent months, intensified checking drives and imposed penalties, but sporadic enforcement alone will not yield lasting results. What Srinagar requires is a zero-tolerance approach towards habitual violators, supported by technology-driven solutions such as CCTV surveillance, e-challans and real-time traffic monitoring. Strict action against illegal parking, particularly in no-parking zones, must be a priority to ensure smoother vehicular movement. However, enforcement must go hand in hand with public cooperation. Civic sense among motorists is as critical as policing. Awareness campaigns highlighting the consequences of violations, both legal and moral, can help instil discipline. Respect for traffic rules is not merely about avoiding fines but about ensuring safety, saving time and maintaining urban order. A cleaner, safer and more efficient traffic system in Srinagar is achievable only if the drive against violations is sustained, impartial and supported by citizens. Discipline on roads is the first step towards easing congestion and improving the quality of urban life in the city.
