The noticeable decline in road fatalities is both appreciable and positive development as the deaths have reduced from 279 in 2024 to 202 in 2025, thereby reflecting the tangible impact of sustained enforcement and continuous public awareness campaigns. As per the figures, over three lakh challans have been issued during the year and Rs 11.24 crore has been generated in revenue from the norm violators. However, these figures must not be viewed merely through a revenue lens, but represent an attempt to correct unsafe behaviour. The traffic enforcement and public awareness drives plans that are expected to continue with undiminished commitment in 2026 as informed by the top official, sends a reassuring message at a time when road safety remains a serious concern across Jammu and Kashmir. With road accidents claiming precious lives every year, the emphasis on protecting human life must remain the cornerstone of traffic policing. Strict enforcement of traffic rules is often viewed as punitive, yet its real purpose is preventive. Equally vital is public awareness. Enforcement without education risks alienating road users, while awareness without enforcement lacks impact. Campaigns highlighting safe driving practices, school outreach programmes and community engagement help cultivate a culture of responsibility. When citizens understand that traffic regulations exist to safeguard lives, compliance becomes a shared civic duty rather than a forced obligation. However, the success of these initiatives also depends on better infrastructure and inter-departmental coordination. Poor road conditions, inadequate signage, insufficient lighting and encroachments often undermine enforcement efforts. Addressing these gaps will significantly complement the Traffic Police’s initiatives. As 2026 approaches, sustained commitment, transparency and public cooperation will be crucial.
