Crackdown on supply networks

Are we forgetting our parents?

Jammu and Kashmir is all set to witness a fresh snowfall as the weatherman has predicted the back-to-back Western Disturbances in the region with major activity expected in the next week. At this juncture, the focus must now firmly shift from reaction to readiness. The snowfall in every winter comes to test the administration’s preparedness and the resilience of essential services. Timely deployment of men and machinery can make the crucial difference between manageable disruption and avoidable hardship for the public. Experience has shown that delays in road clearance, power restoration and water supply repairs compound public inconvenience and economic losses. Snow accumulation, if not addressed promptly, can paralyse transport networks, restrict access to healthcare and disrupt education and livelihoods. Therefore, pre-positioning snow-clearing equipment, ensuring adequate fuel supplies and placing field staff on high alert are not optional measures but administrative imperatives. Special attention must be paid to vulnerable and high-altitude areas where snowfall tends to be heavier and access more difficult. Hospitals, power substations, water treatment plants and communication networks should be prioritised to ensure uninterrupted services. Coordination among departments, Public Works, Power Development, Health, Disaster Management and local administrations, is essential for swift decision-making and effective response. Equally important is clear and timely communication with the public. Advisories on travel, power shutdowns, school schedules and emergency helplines help citizens plan better and reduce panic. As Kashmir braces for moderate snowfall, this is the right time to demonstrate foresight, coordination and efficiency. Winters cannot be wished away, but their impact can certainly be managed. Keeping men and machinery battle-ready must be ensured to safeguard daily life, economic activity and public confidence during the harshest months of the year.
