Crackdown on supply networks

Are we forgetting our parents?

The strong gusty winds across Jammu and Kashmir in the late evening hours has left a trail of destruction, damaging houses, power infrastructure and other properties in several districts across the region. For many families, these winds have turned an already harsh winter into a period of acute distress. As the temperature continue to settle below freezing point, the situation calls for swift and compassionate intervention by the administration. Reports of damaged rooftops, shattered windows and partially collapsed structures underline the fragile condition of housing in many parts of the Union Territory. For economically weaker sections, even minor structural damage can render homes unsafe and uninhabitable during winter. Disruption of electricity and communication lines has further compounded the hardship, affecting heating, lighting and access to emergency services. Immediate assistance to affected families must be the top priority. Rapid assessment teams should be deployed to conduct on-ground damage surveys so that relief reaches beneficiaries without delay. Providing temporary shelter, blankets, heating devices and essential rations can prevent families from being exposed to extreme cold. Quick restoration of power and road connectivity is equally vital to normalize daily life. Financial compensation for damaged houses and properties should be processed on a fast-track basis, cutting through procedural delays. Local administrations, panchayats and disaster management teams need to work in close coordination to identify the most vulnerable households, including the elderly, children and those living in remote areas. While immediate relief is crucial, these recurring weather-related incidents also highlight the need for long-term preparedness. Strengthening housing structures, improving early warning systems and promoting disaster-resilient construction practices can significantly reduce future losses.
