The Kerala-based group’s nod indicating that Srinagar has the feasibility to run a Water Metro, is a development brimming with promise. At a time when cities are searching for sustainable, efficient, and inclusive transport solutions, this proposal offers Srinagar an opportunity to rethink urban mobility while unlocking significant economic potential. What is needed now is not prolonged deliberation, but focused and determined action from the government to translate this feasibility into reality. Srinagar’s extensive network of rivers, canals, and lakes, most notably the Jhelum, makes it naturally suited for a water-based public transport system. A Water Metro would ease pressure on congested roads, reduce pollution, and provide residents with a reliable and affordable commuting option. More importantly, it would blend seamlessly with the city’s heritage, offering a modern solution rooted in its traditional waterways. The economic benefits could be substantial. The project would generate direct employment during construction and operation, while also boosting allied sectors such as tourism, hospitality, boat-building, and local services. For a region where economic opportunities are often limited, such a project could act as a catalyst for broader urban renewal. Enhanced connectivity would also benefit small traders and artisans by improving access to markets and increasing footfall. However, feasibility alone does not guarantee success. The government must now work proactively, finalising funding models, ensuring environmental safeguards, upgrading infrastructure, and coordinating between departments. Learning from Kerala’s experience with the Kochi Water Metro could help avoid delays and cost overruns. Delaying the project would mean missing a rare chance to combine sustainability with economic growth. A Water Metro in Srinagar would not just be a transport initiative; it would be a statement of intent, signalling innovation, confidence, and commitment to the city’s future. Swift execution, backed by political will and administrative efficiency, can ensure that this vision benefits the local economy and improves the quality of life for the people of Srinagar.
