As the holy month of Ramadhan approaches, the reports indicate that Jammu & Kashmir as well as Ladakh, would experience a power paucity of around 34 per cent during the month, thereby putting a responsibility on the government to take elaborate measures and ensure the paucity doesn’t affect the people during the blessed month. Electricity, especially in the holy month of Ramadhan, is an essential service that sustains households during Sehri and Iftaar, the two most crucial hours of the day for Muslim community. A prolonged or poorly managed power deficit during peak hours would cause immense inconvenience to the people. In many areas, especially in remote belts of Ladakh and hilly regions of Jammu & Kashmir, erratic supply can disrupt not just domestic life but also small businesses that see increased activity during Ramadhan evenings. The situation calls for elaborate and proactive measures rather than routine advisories. Authorities must prioritise load management strategies that ensure uninterrupted supply during Sehri and Iftaar. Advance scheduling, transparent communication of power cuts, and special Ramadhan rosters can help reduce public anxiety. Temporary augmentation through additional procurement, better coordination between generation and distribution agencies, and strict curbs on power pilferage are equally essential. The public cooperation at this juncture is pivotal. Sensible consumption, avoiding wastage and community-level awareness can ease pressure on the grid. However, the larger responsibility lies with the administration to treat this challenge with urgency and sensitivity. Ramadhan is a time of spiritual discipline and collective harmony. Ensuring reliable electricity during this month is a gesture of respect towards the faith and well-being of millions. Proactive planning today can prevent hardship tomorrow.
