The Government order regarding the designation of JKBOSE/State School Standards Authority (SSSA) as nodal agency for conducting Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) has been kept in abeyance, till further orders. The fresh directive has come as a breather for the in-service teachers as the prospect of a mandatory test determining their job security had created anxiety and uncertainty. Teaching is a profession built on experience, classroom engagement and years of service. While ensuring quality education through standardised benchmarks is a legitimate policy objective, the manner and timing of implementation matter greatly. Making TET compulsory for teachers who have already spent years in service risked undermining morale and diverting attention from classroom responsibilities. The decision to pause the order points towards the seriousness of the government towards the concerns raised by educators. It reflects an understanding that reforms in the education sector must be consultative. At the same time, this development should not derail the larger goal of improving educational standards. Accountability and competence remain central to strengthening the education system. However, mechanisms to assess and upgrade skills must be fair, transparent and sensitive to the realities of serving teachers. The abeyance offers an opportunity for constructive dialogue between the administration and the teaching fraternity. A balanced framework, which safeguards job security while enhancing professional standards, is the need of the hour. Education reform succeeds not through compulsion, but through consensus and confidence-building.
