Jammu, Mar 6: In a landmark development for regional healthcare and medical education, the Department of Radiation Oncology at Government Medical College Jammu has inaugurated its first-ever Postgraduate (MD) batch in Radiation Oncology. This historic step is set to significantly strengthen cancer treatment services and expand advanced medical training in Jammu and the surrounding areas.
The introduction of the postgraduate program marks a pivotal milestone for the institution, aligning with the rising demand for specialised oncology expertise amid increasing cancer cases across the country. The initiative aims to enhance academic excellence, improve patient care, and address the regional need for trained radiation oncologists.
Led by Principal and Dean Dr Ashutosh Gupta, who has been instrumental in expanding medical education and oncology services, the program reflects the college’s commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure.
Officials said that this move would not only open new academic opportunities for aspiring doctors but also substantially benefit patients through access to modern treatment approaches.
The Department of Radiation Oncology, headed by Dr Rahul Sharma, formally welcomed the inaugural batch during a modest ceremony, described by faculty as a proud and historic occasion.
Dr Sharma said the department is dedicated to providing comprehensive training, focusing on clinical exposure, hands-on cancer treatment experience, and research activities. The programme will familiarise students with cutting-edge radiotherapy techniques and advanced treatment planning systems.
“The start of this postgraduate course is a major step in building a strong academic foundation in oncology. Our goal is to train skilled radiation oncologists who will significantly contribute to improving cancer treatment and patient outcomes,” he said.
The programme will be supported by a dedicated faculty team, including Dr Sandeep Kaur and Dr Swaran Singh Katoch, who will mentor students in academic, clinical, and research pursuits. A specialised team comprising Sahil Gupta, Parvaze Ahmad Rathar, and Asma Javid will oversee medical physics and radiation safety, ensuring adherence to international standards and best practices.
Faculty members expressed optimism that this initiative will cultivate skilled specialists capable of tackling the region’s growing cancer burden.
A senior faculty member said, “The introduction of the MD programme will not only bolster academic activities but also bring the latest treatment techniques into clinical practice, ultimately benefiting patient care.”
With the launch of this postgraduate programme, Government Medical College Jammu advances its mission to promote specialised medical education and reinforce its role as a key healthcare and training hub in Jammu and Kashmir. The move is expected to benefit countless cancer patients by ensuring access to well-trained experts and state-of-the-art treatment facilities in the region.
