Srinagar, Mar 18: Intermittent rain in the plains and fresh snowfall in upper reaches for the fourth running day on Wednesday brought chill back in Kashmir, while the MeT predicted that weather may remain inclement till March 20, coinciding with the expected day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
An official of the MeT department said that fresh Western Disturbance is active over the region, resulting in widespread cloud cover and precipitation across the Valley.
As per the details upper reaches, including Gulmarg and Sonamarg, received fresh snowfall, while plains such as Srinagar witnessed intermittent drizzle during the day.
“Generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate rain or snow at many places is likely till March 20. A few higher reaches of Chenab valley and South Kashmir may receive moderate to heavy snowfall,” he said.
Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, is likely to be observed on March 20 or 21, subject to the sighting of the moon. Officials said the prevailing weather conditions may impact travel plans, particularly for those heading to their native places or visiting relatives for the festival.
The MeT department has issued an advisory asking travellers and transporters to plan their movement carefully, especially over higher reaches and key mountain passes, where snowfall and slippery road conditions could lead to disruptions.
“There is a possibility of thunder and gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places, along with chances of hailstorm,” the official said.
Day temperatures across the Valley remained below normal due to the wet spell, leading to a noticeable drop in the mercury and a return of chill, especially during mornings and evenings.
The MeT department has forecast generally dry weather from March 21 to 25, with a brief spell of light rain or snow at isolated places on March 23. Another spell of cloudy weather with light precipitation at scattered to many places is expected between March 26 and 28.
Farmers have been advised to suspend farm operations till March 20 in view of the ongoing wet spell and possible adverse conditions. (KNO)
