Srinagar’s achievement of securing “TB-Free Panchayat” Gold status for the third consecutive year is a public health triumph that sets a national benchmark. At a time when tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a significant challenge across the country, this achievement demonstrates what focused governance, community participation, and sustained healthcare efforts can achieve at the grassroots level. Under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), the TB-Mukt Panchayat initiative has proven to be a game-changer. By decentralizing responsibility and empowering Panchayats, the programme ensures that surveillance; testing and treatment are not confined to hospitals but embedded within communities. Srinagar’s 21 Panchayats meeting stringent indicators, ranging from high testing rates to strong treatment success, reflect a model of accountability and coordination that deserves emulation. However, the larger significance of this success lies beyond Srinagar. Other districts across Jammu and Kashmir must take note and follow suit with urgency and commitment. While challenges such as difficult terrain, limited healthcare access in remote areas, and social stigma persist, Srinagar’s example proves that these barriers are not insurmountable. What is required is stronger political will, improved coordination among departments, and active involvement of local bodies. Equally important is public awareness. Early detection remains the cornerstone of TB elimination, and communities must be encouraged to seek timely testing without fear or hesitation. Health workers, Panchayat representatives, and civil society must work in tandem to sustain momentum. Srinagar has shown the way. Now, it is incumbent upon the rest of Jammu and Kashmir to replicate this success. Achieving a TB-free future is a collective responsibility that demands unified action across all districts.
