Srinagar is steadily choking under the weight of its own growth. The rapid increase in vehicle population, coupled with stagnant road infrastructure, has turned daily commuting into a frustrating ordeal for thousands. What were once manageable roads are now persistently clogged, particularly during peak hours, reflecting a clear mismatch between urban expansion and planning. It is no longer sufficient to rely on temporary traffic diversions or sporadic enforcement drives. The need of the hour is a comprehensive and time-bound plan to expand and upgrade road networks across the city. Key arterial routes and inner-city roads must be widened wherever feasible, while alternative routes should be developed to ease pressure on existing corridors. Without such intervention, congestion will only worsen, affecting productivity, emergency services, and overall quality of life. Equally concerning is the unchecked encroachment of roadsides. Street vendors and shopkeepers, while integral to the local economy, often occupy significant portions of footpaths and road margins. This not only narrows the already limited carriageway but also forces pedestrians onto the roads, compounding traffic chaos and safety risks. The absence of designated vending zones has allowed this issue to spiral into a persistent civic challenge. Authorities must strike a balance between livelihood concerns and public convenience. Clearly demarcated vending spaces, strict enforcement against illegal encroachments, and sustained monitoring can help restore order. Public cooperation, too, remains crucial in ensuring that reforms are effective. Srinagar stands at a critical juncture. If decisive steps are not taken now to expand roads and reclaim public spaces, the city risks slipping into chronic congestion. A forward-looking approach today can pave the way for smoother, safer mobility tomorrow.
