Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

The recent enforcement drive carried out by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) across Kashmir division is a welcome and much-needed step towards restoring discipline on the roads. At a time when traffic violations have become alarmingly routine, such comprehensive action sends a strong message that road safety cannot be compromised. Conducted under the supervision of the Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir, with oversight from the Transport Department Jammu and Kashmir, the drive targeted high-traffic zones and accident-prone areas. The scale of violations detected, 822 challans issued, 124 vehicles blacklisted and 196 driving licences recommended for suspension, reveals the extent of disregard for traffic norms. The realisation of Rs 18.56 lakh in penalties further underscores how widespread these violations have become. However, enforcement alone cannot be the sole solution. While penal action is necessary to deter offenders, the larger goal must be to cultivate a culture of responsible driving. Reckless behaviour such as overloading, use of mobile phones while driving, and neglect of seat belts and helmets not only endangers the violators but also innocent road users. Equally important is sustained awareness. Authorities must complement such drives with continuous public outreach, especially targeting young drivers who often contribute significantly to risky behaviour on roads. Schools, colleges, and community platforms can play a vital role in spreading awareness about the consequences of traffic violations. Moreover, infrastructure improvements, better signage, road markings, and stricter monitoring through technology, can enhance the effectiveness of enforcement efforts. A coordinated approach involving enforcement, education, and engineering is essential for lasting impact. The department’s resolve to continue such drives is encouraging. If pursued consistently, these efforts can gradually instill a sense of accountability among motorists and pave the way for safer, more orderly roads across Kashmir.
