Traffic congestion in Srinagar has become more than a daily inconvenience as it is now a pressing urban challenge that demands immediate and sustained intervention. As the city expands and vehicular numbers rise, the strain on existing infrastructure has intensified, calling for a well-coordinated and multi-pronged strategy. A key step lies in strengthening infrastructure at critical choke points. Upgradation of junctions such as Natipora–Chanapora and the timely completion of major projects like the Shalteng–Parimpora flyover can significantly ease traffic flow. Equally important is the development of adequate parking facilities. The absence of designated parking spaces has led to rampant on-road parking, narrowing carriageways and worsening congestion. Identifying and strictly enforcing no-parking zones in high-density areas is essential. Enforcement, in fact, must be at the heart of any traffic management plan. Strict action against violations, supported by fully functional Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS), can deter errant driving and improve discipline on the roads. Technology must be leveraged not just for monitoring, but also for ensuring accountability. Another often-overlooked factor is the role of school traffic. Unregulated school timings contribute heavily to peak-hour congestion. Rationalizing these timings, in consultation with stakeholders, can help distribute traffic more evenly throughout the day. Public transport infrastructure also needs attention. Clearly marked bus stops, proper stop lines, and commuter-friendly facilities can streamline movement and encourage a shift away from private vehicles. Initiatives like modern bus stands and support systems, including charging stations, are steps in the right direction. Ultimately, tackling congestion requires coordination among multiple agencies and a commitment to long-term planning. Srinagar’s traffic problem cannot be solved overnight, but with sustained efforts, disciplined enforcement and smart urban planning, the city can move towards smoother, safer mobility.
