Anantnag, Apr 13: Two siblings drowned after slipping into the Jhelum river in south Kashmir’s Anantnag District on Monday.
An official said that the duo drowned after accidentally falling into the river while washing livestock in the Padshahibagh village of Bijbehara town this afternoon. “One of the brothers slipped, and in a bid to save him, the other also slipped into the river,” the official added.
Rescue teams, including Anantnag Police and SDRF, rushed to the spot and launched an operation soon after the incident was reported. However, both could not be saved.
The bodies were later retrieved by locals and rescue teams.
The deceased were identified as Majid Bashirand Shahid Bashir, both sons of Bashir Ahmed Malik and residents of Jablipora Bijbehara.
Locals said that one of the brothers, Majid, was scheduled to get married in May. The area is in deep mourning, and both were laid to rest in a local graveyard. (KNO)
